"Love the colors. Love the nib. Love
all three of them (I may keep them all for myself)! What more can I say Norman?"
"Another incredible find from His
Nibs, or should I say 'His Majesty' ?
The Fuscia that I ordered just really pops and I love the pearlescent
look to all three of them. What I really love especially though is the matte
finish -- and intricate engraving -- of the nib! It's like no other nib that I
have in my collection."
"Wow Norman! I've always admired
Delta pens from afar, due to their higher prices, which were a bit out of my
price range. I'm so glad that they've made a pen model for the rest of us,
without sacrificing the quality that I've always read about. I'm loving my white
beauty and it's now my favorite daily user!"
From Delta's copy:
"Crafted in Italy by Delta's skilled artisans, the Unica collection is turned from pearlescent rods of solid Italian resin. Each writing instrument is crafted from unique handmade materials and offered in a choice of three shimmering finishes: Blue, Fuscia and Whte. Accented with highly polished rhodium-plated trim, the Unica Collection is designed to have a slim profile, practical for use with day planners, checkbooks or briefcases...The fountain pen is mounted with a steel nib in a choice of Fine, Medium or Broad and accepts standard international ink cartridges or converter."
Long a premier fountain pen company, Delta pen prices have also been rather 'premier' -- in large part due to the fact that most models have been limited editions. Now, Delta is making a real push to broaden their line to create superior pens at a price that the rest of us can afford. I never really thought I'd see a Delta pen that retails for less than $100.00!
In that spirit, Delta has taken a model -- the Unica -- which began life as a limited edition pen, and has produced a non-limited-edition version in three beautiful, pearlized colors.
I'd describe the Unica as a mid-sized pen these days (pen sizes, like cars and waistlines only seem to increase with time), measuring 5-18" capped, 6" posted and 4-3/4" with cap held aside. That's plenty long enough to use unposted, which is my usual choice. There's a nice girth to the pen which I personally prefer, but all who I've had try it (small hand, large hands, women, men) have commented on how comfortable the pen is to use.
The cap screws on and friction posts, and sports a roller clip for easy placement and removal from a shirt pocket or checkbook. It's a very secure clip though, as it's set tight and offers a firm grip when in place.
I'm a big fan of the simple, clean lines of the pen. The design is broadest at the top of the cap and gracefully tapers to the barrel end. Joining the simple design of the clip is a single rhodium-plated band mid-pen (it's actually on the barrel) with a subtle 'DELTA Italy' just above it, on the cap itself. The white and fuscia versions continue the self-same resin to cap top and barrel bottom, while the blue for some reason has black 'jewels' at each end. Somehow, it just 'works' for the blue, and adds additional visual appeal.
Unscrewing the cap reveals a bit of surprise, nib-wise. Rather than present you with a shiny gold or rhodium-plated steel nib, Delta went with a matte-finish steel nib, which I find absolutely gorgeous. Adding to the stunning appearance of the nib is the intricate engraving work which accompanies DELTA and the nib size. Speaking of nib sizes, the pen is available in an F, M or B.
Unscrewing the section reveals a piston converter for bottled ink and an international cartridge is also included -- just in case you can't wait to unscrew a bottle of ink to get writing.
As with all new pens, I recommend to run a dilute solution of dishwashing soap (two or three drops to a small bowl of water) through the pen and converter a few times, followed by water only. Step one is effective at removing manufacturing oils that can tend to make the ink less than enthusiastic in heading from the converter to the nib, and step two removes the traces of the detergent you've used...which tends to have the opposite, diuretic effect. The pen will also take International-style cartridges, such as those from Private Reserve. A Delta gift box and warranty are included.
IMPORTANT SERVICE NOTE: Every nib that ships from His Nibs is closely examined under high magnification and tuned or adjusted if needed. About 85% of modern nibs need some adjustment out-of-the-box from the manufacturer for an optimal writing experience. Most commonly, the tines of the nib are misaligned -- which would cause scratchiness at the minimum; the slit between the tines is partially or fully closed -- which would starve the nib of ink and at best cause skipping; or the slit between the tines is too wide -- which will either again cause skipping, or conversely, flooding. There are other factors -- such as separation of the nib from the feed -- that are inspected and repaired before any pen leaves the Palace.
The only 100% guarantee of course comes when the pen is actually filled with ink and written with for the first time, but our pre-shipping inspections and tunings have eliminated 99.99999 (my finger is getting tired) of the frustrations that a customer experiences when first using a new fountain pen. Although this can be time-consuming on occasion, it affords our customers a much more pleasant experience when receiving a fountain pen from His Nibs -- and saves us the frustration of dealing with returns!

Warranties and returns
If an item proves to be defective, in most cases the manufacturer's warranty will apply. However, please email us first so that we can determine the easiest way to resolve the problem to your satisfaction. In the case of fountain pens -- which are a bit more individualistic than other writing instruments -- what may at first appear to be a defect (hard starting or poor flow for example), can in almost all cases be resolved with a few simple 'tweaks' to the nib, which we'll be happy to guide you through or perhaps suggest returning to us for adjustment.
Should you wish to return a non-defective item within 3 days of receipt because it doesn't suit you for some reason, again please email us and we'll arrange an exchange, credit or refund (minus any shipping/insurance charges), if the item is returned in an 'as new' condition. If you've dipped a fountain pen to try its writing characteristics, kindly clean off any ink residue prior to shipping -- to save us both a nasty surprise .
We want you to be happy with your purchase from HisNibs.com and hope to have you join the ranks of our many long-term, repeat customers!
